Disaster Relief Open House: W.Va.

June 10, 2008

An Inside Look at the Red Cross in Action

Open house provides a rare glimpse of a large-scale relief operation

Morgantown, WV, June 10, 2008 – Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a Red Cross disaster volunteer? Residents can get a rare look at a national disaster relief operation, and learn more about the many volunteer opportunities with the American Red Cross, by coming by the chapter offices at 1299 Pineview Drive in Morgantown Tuesday evening. The chapter is holding an informal open house from 5pm to 7pm. Visitors will have a chance to talk to volunteers from all over the country about their experiences, and learn more about how to become a trained disaster volunteer and assist in large-scale events.

Red Cross disaster training is the crucial first step to being able to deploy to relief operations such as hurricanes, tornadoes and flooding, both here at home and across the United States. Volunteers are also needed for the other services the Red Cross provides, such as Health and Safety training, and Services to the Armed Forces. There are countless opportunities to make a difference — all ages are welcome, and people with disabilities are also a vital part of the Red Cross volunteer force.

Light refreshments will be served at Tuesday’s open house, and visitors will have a chance to tour the operation and see the latest in communications technology brought in from National Red Cross headquarters in Washington, D.C. to help with the West Virginia flooding relief operation.
