Press Release: Wisconsin 6.26.08

Governor Doyle Visits, Applauds Red Cross
Work Continues as Waters Rise and Recede

Contact: Barb Behling – Office: 571-918-5547 Cell: 512-529-79

Madison, WI. June 26, 2008 – As flood waters across Wisconsin rose and fell, leaving behind it a path of destruction, the constant was the presence of the American Red Cross. Governor Doyle visited the Wisconsin Flood Headquarters at 1111 Deming Way this morning. He listened to the morning briefing and then addressed the team of professionally trained volunteers.

Glenn Lockwood, the Disaster Director started the morning briefing with an overview of services 964 trained Red Cross professionals, whom have gathered from around nation to assist Wisconsin’s disaster relief operation. To date, they have provided the following services:

• 35 Shelters Opened
• 54,788 Meals and Snacks Served
• 23 Emergency Response Vehicles have traveled Wisconsin – coast-to-coast
• 14,841 Clean-up and Comfort Kits Distributed
• 3,397 Health and Mental Health Contacts

He continued, “While our work has assisted thousands during dark moments, we have more territory to cover and the rain isn’t over yet.” He then thanked Governor Doyle for all his disaster support and long-standing support of the American Red Cross.”

Having traveled many days and miles in Blackhawk helicopters, Gov. Doyle stated “I’ve seen Red Cross personnel in action, doing just what they have been trained to do. In fact, at one shelter I was chatting with volunteers from Fond du Lac and within a few days, the storms hit their hometown. I’m sure they hurried back to assist there as well. The cooperation and dedication from around the state and the nation is unprecedented.”

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year, disasters like the Midwest Tornadoes and Floods by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disaster. The American Red Cross honors donor intent. If you wish to designate your donation to a specific disaster please do so at the time of your donation. Call 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013.
