RED CROSS KEEPS FAITH WITH DONORS’ GENEROSITY
Charity monitors assistance, doesn’t tolerate fraud

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, Thursday, July 3, 2008 – American Red Cross relief assistance is made possible by generous donations from the American people, who want to be sure their neighbors near and far get the help they need when disaster strikes. The organization constantly monitors its service delivery to be sure it is meeting genuine needs.

“We know that disasters often bring out the best in people,” said volunteer Deb Lancaster, who is leading Red Cross disaster response in Iowa and the Quad Cities area. “But unfortunately, sometimes they bring out the worst in a few people.

“We have procedures that check the validity of identification and when we suspect someone is trying to get help by falsifying the facts, we take action. We cooperate in prosecuting fraud, waste and abuse to the fullest extent of the law.”

In Cedar Rapids, Red Cross’s procedures uncovered facts that led to the arrest this week of individuals who allegedly used false ID to get assistance meant for flood victims.

To date, the Red Cross flood and tornado relief operation in Iowa has opened more than 6,100 emergency assistance cases. Trained interviewers meet with individuals and families face-to-face to discuss their emergency disaster related needs for such things as groceries, clothing or medications. Emergency assistance may also help cover rent or minor repairs that will help people get back into their homes more quickly.

Individuals or families who apply to the Red Cross for assistance must bring some form of identification showing their address, as proof that they lived in the area affected by the disaster.

To report suspected waste, fraud or abuse of Red Cross disaster aid, call the Concerned Connection Line toll-free at 1-888-309-9679. This 24-hour confidential number is answered by a third-party communication specialist who will take the information and give the caller a unique identification number to see how the case has been handled. Callers can remain anonymous.

Red Cross volunteers will be at client service centers from 9 a.m. to noon on Independence Day, July 4, to meet with flood-impacted residents. On Saturday, operations will return to normal hours, which are from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from 1-6 p.m. on Sundays. Centers are at:
• Westdale Mall, 2600 Edgewood Road SW, Cedar Rapids (former Osco’s next to JC Penney)
• American Red Cross of Quad Cities, 1100 River Drive, Moline, Ill.

Meanwhile, in Cedar Falls, the last of the residents at the Red Cross evacuation shelter at the University of Northern Iowa are relocating to more long-term accommodations, which will allow the shelter to close.

Flood-impacted residents who find they need shelter or assistance can call 1-866-GET-INFO (1-866-438-4636) toll-free to access services.

Three Red Cross shelters remain open in eastern Iowa:
• Viola Gibson Elementary School, 6101 Gibson Drive NE, Cedar Rapids
• Prairie High School, 401 76th Ave., Cedar Rapids
• Johnson County Fairgrounds, 4261 Oakcrest Hill Road SE, Building A, Iowa City

Mobile feeding trucks circulating through the Wapello area are carrying supplies such as gloves, buckets and bleach for residents cleaning their flood-impacted homes.

All Red Cross bulk distribution sites are now closed.

The Red Cross will continue to adjust services across Iowa as needs change for shelters, meals, snacks, cleanup supplies, physical and mental health services and individual client assistance.

In Iowa, through July 2, the Red Cross has:
• Opened 36 shelters with its partner organizations and provided more than 6,400 overnight stays.
• Served some 637,500 meals and snacks
• Opened more than 6,100 emergency assistance cases.
• Sent 44 emergency response vehicles and 1,630 Red Cross workers.
• Made more than 15,300 first aid and mental health contacts.
• Distributed more than 28,500 clean-up kits.

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. Red Cross Combining Shelters

Contact: Disaster Public Affairs, Telephone: (571) 918-5585

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, Friday, June 27, 2008 – As more flood evacuees find long-term temporary accommodations, the population of American Red Cross evacuation shelters in the Coralville/Iowa City area is dropping. As a result, the remaining residents of a shelter at North West Junior High School in Coralville are moving today to the shelter in Building A at the Johnson County Fairgrounds, 4261 Oakcrest Hill Road SE, Iowa City.

Residents of the area who find they need shelter because of flooding can also go to the fairgrounds location.

Four Red Cross shelters remain open in eastern Iowa:
• University of Northern Iowa, West Gymnasium, 2501 Minnesota St., Cedar Falls
• Viola Gibson Elementary School, 6101 Gibson Drive NE, Cedar Rapids
• Prairie High School, 401 76th Ave., Cedar Rapids
• Johnson County Fairgrounds, 4261 Oakcrest Hill Road SE, Building A, Iowa City

“It’s a good sign for this area, that people who were displaced by the flooding are finding longer-term housing and can move on from the evacuation shelters,” said Bruce Miller, who is in charge of the Red Cross shelter operations in eastern Iowa and the Quad Cities area.

“We were glad to be able to provide so many people with a safe place to stay, but we recognize that a big public shelter is not most people’s idea of home.”

Since the tornado/flooding emergency began in Iowa more than a month ago, the Red Cross and its partner agencies have opened 36 shelters and provided nearly 5,500 overnight stays. Most of the shelters have since closed.

Meanwhile, Red Cross workers continue to meet with flood-impacted residents to provide assistance for their emergency needs. All service delivery sites will be open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday and from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday at:
• Westdale Mall, 2600 Edgewood Road SW, Cedar Rapids (former Osco’s next to JC Penney)
• Sycamore Plaza, 1600 Sycamore St., Iowa City
• American Red Cross of Quad Cities, 1100 River Drive, Moline, Ill.
• L&M Elementary School, 14506 170th St., Letts
• West Burlington Arnold Junior/Senior High School, 408 W. Van Weiss Blvd., West Burlington

Emergency assistance may include providing the means to pay for groceries, clothing, medicine or
transportation. It may also help cover rent or minor repairs that will help people get back into their homes more quickly. Individuals or families who apply to the Red Cross for assistance must bring some form of identification showing their address, as proof that they lived in the area affected by the disaster.

Disaster victims, who because of age, physical difficulty, or similar reasons cannot come to a Red Cross Service Center, may call 1-866-GET-INFO (438-4636) toll-free to discuss assistance.

Red Cross volunteers will also be handing out clean-up supplies, such as gloves, buckets and bleach from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-6 p.m. Sunday at:

Red Cross assistance to date in Iowa (as of June 27):

Press Release: The American Red Cross Response 6.26.08

June 26, 2008

Cost of Recent Floods, Tornadoes and Wildfires Rises to At Least $30 Million
Ongoing relief operations combined with client assistance as residents return home push costs higher;
The Red Cross is executing largest disaster response since Hurricane Katrin
a.

Contact: Public Affairs Desk –  Telephone: (202) 303-5551

Washington, Thursday, June 26, 2008-The American Red Cross response to massive flooding across the Central United States, combined with ongoing relief operations for tornadoes and other disasters since April 1, will cost the organization at least $30 million, according to latest estimates. The Red Cross is mounting its largest relief effort since the response to Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma in 2005, surpassing the Southern California wildfires of 2007.

At the same time, a badly depleted Disaster Relief Fund means that the organization is borrowing funds to make up the difference between this cost and donations made to the fund. To date, individuals and companies have graciously contributed more than $13 million in donations and pledges. Others wishing to support the Red Cross with this and future disaster responses are encouraged to call 1-800-REDCROSS, or visit http://www.redcross.org to make a donation.

The Red Cross is actively helping communities who are still dealing with flood waters through support like emergency sheltering, food, clean up supplies and emotional support. The Red Cross has also begun client casework for those residents who are able to return home, connecting them to services to help get their homes and communities back in order, while offering clean up kits, meals, snacks and water to thousands of people. Dangerous wildfires across Northern California are threatening homes and lives, and the Red Cross is also there sheltering and feeding evacuees and firefighters battling these potentially deadly fires. Nationwide, the Red Cross has dealt with 36 major disaster operations since April.

“While the Red Cross continues to respond to the emergency needs of those displaced by flooding, we are beginning to work with those who are already able to go back home,” said Joe Becker, Senior Vice President, Disaster Services. “Support to those returning home is critical to the process of recovery, and the Red Cross provides these services even as we continue to respond to emergencies wherever we’re needed across the country.”

A long spring of dangerous weather, from flooding to tornadoes, left the Red Cross with few financial resources on hand. These current floods and the threat of an active hurricane season mean the Red Cross needs significant resources to deal with this and future disasters.

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year, disasters like floods and tornadoes by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disaster. The American Red Cross honors donor intent. If you wish to designate your donation to a specific disaster please do so at the time of your donation. Call 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish).
